Rose Aggressive In Return, Bulls Win in Indy

Well that was fun! Ahhh, seeing Derrick back on the court last night was a true highlight. I couldn’t stop smiling. He seemed focused and determined, yet at home and comfortable. You wondered as a fan would he pass more, would he run differently, etc… But then at the 8:53 mark in the 1st quarter, it happened:

A collective sigh of relief was then made by D. Rose fans. He really is back. He is not scared. He is still willing to drive the lane and absorb contact… His explosiveness is intact. That knee looks to be fine. STILL makes you nervous to see him fall and get knocked around, but I keep reminding myself that he has given himself the BEST chance at a full recovery by not rushing back.

Neither team shot the ball well and there was sloppy play on both sides. The Bulls committed 22 turnovers (Rose had 4 alone) but made up for that stat by outrebounding Indy 56-38 (17 off). The game was played at a regular season pace, no question. Each team had its respective runs and played decent defensively.

Game Changer:
Bulls would pull ahead after a 12-1 run and tying the game 64-64 in the 3Q.

Peak Performer(s):
Taj Gibson led all scorers with strong outing: 31 min | 9-12 | 12 rebs (4 off) | 1 ast | 3 blocks

Weak Performer(s):
Danny Granger also made his return back to the court after missing all but 5 games last season with knee tendinitis. He is also restricted from practicing fully… He was 2-10 for 6 points and 2 assists in 29 minutes of play.

“They hit me in practice, I’m used to getting hit now. Falling, slipping — I got that out the way.” — D.Rose

Welcome back, Derrick.

Sideline Skinny:

  • Paul George grabbed his jersey & got fired up in the 3Q after Indy managed a 16-4 run.
  • Derrick sat with a softball and then a tennis ball under his injured knee, rolling them to keep his muscles loose. He would also have both knees iced after he left the game for good at the 7:07 mark in the 3Q.
  • Derrick was serenaded with “MVP” chants as he stood at the line to take FT’s
  • There was a decent size contingent of Bulls fans in the audience
  • Vogel left four of his starters in the game late in the 4Q and they played mostly against the Bulls bench.

Injury Report:
Noah scratched due to a groin “tweak.” Not thought to be serious, but no reason to risk him in an exhibition. He is expected to miss “several” of these intial pre-season games.
