Home Opener Turns Into Surprise Rout as Grizz Lose Z-Bo to Injury

Ok, who saw that coming? I have to start this recap out by saying that I wish this was another team that I care nothing about, but I really like the Grizz and I can’t believe that so much of what makes them great has been altered so quickly due to injury…

Game Notes

  • As you all know by now, Z-Bo went down in the 1st quarter with a contusion on his knee… He left for the locker room and the announcers said that he was going to test it before the 3rd Quarter, but I never saw him again
  • The first half was all about Booz. He was all over the place… He was the Utah Jazz Booz. Not sure if it was because his parents were in the audience or not, but I LOVED his activity: 17 pts 11 reb 2 stl 1 blk in 25 minutes
  • I think there was a collective gasp, both on Twitter and in the audience when Booz slapped the ball away from Gasol in the post for one of his steals
  • This game gave us a great chance to look at the bench mob play and they did not disappoint
  • CJ looked like he did a mini-Rondo, going down on his arm similar to the way Rondo did in the Eastern Conference Semis when D.Wade pulled him to the floor. He would leave and would not return.
  • The Bulls defense was in a word, outstanding and the activity (traps, hands reaching for steals, quick/crisp passes out of double teams) was reminiscent of last season.
  • Jimmy Butler got a chance to play… Only 6 minutes, but I was hoping he could play a little bit in the opener.
  • Derrick was quiet offensively, but had 6 assists as he and Booz had a little 2-man game going for a while there and was a staggering +43

Sideline Skinny:

  • C.J. left the UC in a sling… Per Noah, he believes he will be out for a while. Thibs said X-Rays were negative and they will know more on Monday
  • Crowd seemed bored (Derrick even said so in post game locker room interview) early on because of how the game went
  • Rip Hamilton was not dressed and did not play. Per Thibs, they kept him out at the last minute. He tweaked an old groin injury at the Clippers game

Next Up:

Things should get interesting for the Bulls on Tuesday as Atlanta Hawks roll into town… I’ve got plenty to say about this matchup since it is a re-match between our Eastern Conference Semi-Final foes from the playoffs last season. Game Preview sometime soon!

Til’ next time Bulls Fans, let’s enjoy this win!!!
